Disappointed With Engagement Ring

Disappointed With Your Engagement Ring? Here Are 5 Ways To Handle It.

Engagement Rings, Sell Jewelry

Jul 21, 2021

The scene is set. Everything is perfect. Your partner drops to one knee and you can barely hold back a tear when he opens the box and utters those four words you’ve been dying to hear, “Will you marry me?” Of course, you say yes, but you can’t stop looking at the ring in the box, and not in a good way. The ring just isn’t your style. What do you do now?

First, take a deep breath. It happens more often than you think and you are not a terrible person for not liking the ring. Sometimes men just don’t get it right, and that’s okay. Calm down, enjoy your moment and read on for our top 5 tips on what to do if you’re disappointed with your engagement ring.

1. Give It Some Time

If your engagement ring isn’t exactly what you hoped for, give it some time. Even if the ring isn’t love at first sight it may end up growing on you. We’ve all been in the situation when we received something that wasn’t quite what we thought it would be but after a few days fell in love with it. This may end up being the case with your engagement ring so hold tight and don’t make any decisions that you may regret later.

Instead of focusing on the aesthetic of the ring, try finding out why your partner chose that specific ring for you. Maybe your partner chose the ring because it was similar to his mother’s or grandmother’s, or maybe he just knew that it was the one for you. The sentiment behind it may be enough to overpower your feelings toward the ring.

2. Approach the Conversation Gently

If you are still feeling disappointed with your engagement ring, talk to your partner. Approach the conversation gently. Let your partner know how excited you are to be engaged and how much they mean to you. Let them know that you loved the moment but the ring just isn’t you. Ask them if you can work on a solution together. Avoid insulting the ring, even if you truly hate it. Try keeping things positive.

3. Modify It

Think about what it is exactly that you don’t like about your engagement ring. Is it a family heirloom that is outdated? Is the setting wrong? It may be possible to modify the ring to fit your taste. If it’s a family heirloom, talk to your partner and ask if it would be okay to tweak it a bit to make it feel more personal to you. Add a halo, remove the side stones, add side stones, swap the setting. If modifying your engagement ring isn’t a possibility you can always choose a wedding band that is more your style and enhances the style of the engagement ring.

4. Exchange It

Some retailers offer a 30-day exchange if you are unhappy with the ring. If you and your partner have come to the agreement of swapping out your ring for one that suits your taste, have them check the return policy. A restocking or return fee may be applicable so just keep that in mind.

5. Sell It

If exchanging or modifying your ring isn’t in the cards you can always sell it and use the money to choose a ring that is more your style. When selling an engagement ring it is important to research all of your selling options, not all selling outlets provide the same value or security. When selling an item as valuable as an engagement ring, it is best to sell to a reputable jewelry buyer with extensive knowledge in the industry.
