What is Estate Jewelry?

Sometimes we inherit things we don’t want to keep. And sometimes, these items can create huge opportunities for new owners! There is a big market for estate jewelry, from vintage engagement rings to jewelers, jewelry buyers and jewelry enthusiasts at auctions. If you’re wondering “what is estate jewelry”, and/or you’ve just inherited a piece of valuable estate jewelry, here’s everything you need to know about your options.

Estate Jewelry Definition

Estate jewelry is valuable jewelry/watches that have been acquired from a deceased individual’s estate. Estate jewelry is defined as being pre-owned. Although pieces can be “new” in style, most estate jewelry feature vintage or antique styles and materials. This rarity is what makes estate jewelry sought after and valuable.

Despite this, take your time in evaluating what you have and what it means. If you’ve inherited a family treasure that has some sentimental value, why not keep it in the family as an heirloom? For example, families often choose to keep inherited wedding or engagement rings in order to pass them down for generations. Others love the pieces so much (and the person they belonged to) that they just enjoy wearing them. Some choose to update the jewelry or change a certain aspect of it, to turn it into a piece they love.

Only consider liquidating inherited estate jewelry if you’re ready to do so.

Estate Jewelry Worth

If you are, indeed ready and willing, to sell a piece of estate jewelry, you’re probably wondering where to start!

Your first step will be to find out how much it’s worth. Start with some online research that can help identify certain value characteristics (like the year made, brand, style, stones, metals etc.) that you don’t already know. Of course, the state of your estate jewelry will have an impact on its current value. If it’s still in good condition, you’ll likely get a good deal for it. If it’s not in good condition, you may still be able to sell it for scrap value.

Next, find a GIA-trained gemologist who knows about jewelry value to appraise your estate jewelry. And never take one source’s say-so as your final answer! We always recommend getting your jewelry appraised from multiple sources. Always evaluate multiple selling outlets.

Whether you’re in the Houston area, or outside the State of Texas, we can accommodate you with a free appraisal!
